    The Great Execution ()

Wydane przez Century Media RecordsRok wydania Kraj BrasilNapisał Wouter6Komentarze (0)Krisiun - The Great ExecutionThe career of Brazilian death metal fraternity Krisiun can be divided into two distinct eras. The first, their most savagely intense and morbidly straightforward one, spans the five albums cycle that commences with their infamous debut “Black Force Domain” and concludes with the uniformly praised “Ageless Venomous”. The second era, characterized by a much bouncier, groovier, anthemic and almost melodic sound starts with “Works Of Carnage”, the two subsequent albums and lasts into our current subject. The Krisiun of today is a much different beast than the band that debuted with “Black Force Domain” as the band has much more in common these days with “Chaos AD” era Sepultura (which was a record that also broke vehemently with the band’s then established death/thrash past) than it has with US death metal royalty Morbid Angel (“Altars Of Madness”, “Covenant”), Deicide (“Legion”) or US thrash titans Slayer (“Reign In Blood”, “Hell Awaits”). Like Sepultura before them Krisiun opt for an altogether more accessible whole within the perimeter of their death metal framework. There’s no doubt that the three brothers have honed their skills, at least the rhythm section for that matter. Moyses Kolesne still knows how to dish out violent riffing and spirited fiery leads/solos, while drummer Max Kolesne provides a far more varied and diverse attack compared to the band’s earlier catalogue. The vocals and bass by frontman Alex Camargo are functional, but as with past records, they never were Krisiun’s strength. Camargo is no slouch on bass, but his lines are mostly mirroring the riffs of guitarist Moyses and never truly call attention to themselves or actively add another layer to these cuts, as such he will not soon be mistaken for Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse), Chris Richards (ex-Suffocation), Steve DiGiorgio (ex-Death, ex-Autopsy, Faust, Sadus), Novy (ex-Behemoth, ex-Vader), Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ex-Obscura, Pestilence) or Miguel Roy (ex-Cryptopsy). Moving away from their lyrical concept out anti-religion and infernalism “The Great Execution” explores further the historical concepts hinted upon with preceding record “Southern Storm”. The focus now squarely lies on ancient Rome, hallowed antiquity and gladiatorial battles. The artwork, design and lay-out is superb as per usual with this act. Perhaps indicative that the three brothers are aware of their change in direction, they have opted to re-record ‘Black Force Domain’ as a bonus track and nod to the old fanbase. “The Great Execution” follows the template established years ago with “Works Of Carnage” – hopefully the brothers in due course return to their earlier, more honest sound with the records to come.
