Those expecting a mid-era Sepultura tribute band (the moniker could be taken from Sepultura’s 1989 thrash opus “Beneath the Remains”) are sadly mistaken, as this act from Zagreb, Croatia brings contemporary formulaic metalcore, with minor melodic death elements. Like so many young metalcore acts breakdowns are the very reason for this band’s existence. Each song consists of several breakdowns, which are the focal point above all else. To say that this severely hurts the cuts would be an understatement. Breakdowns, when used sparsely, can be a very effective tool to create tension, momentum or atmosphere within a song, but just like Waking the Cadaver this band has based their entire repertoire around them. The half-assed Gothenburg death metal riffing doesn’t serve much of a purpose other than to facilitate the inevitable breakdowns. The drumming doesn’t fare much better. One could argue that the playing is of the required technical level, but that doesn’t negate the realisation that the songwriting is poor and formulaic at best. The fact that half of this record consists of fairly pointless interludes, effects and samples don’t help either. The interlude ‘Human?’ samples “The Matrix”, but this is hardly an inventive sample, as Maltese death metal combo Beheaded already used it in shortened form on their 2002 “Recounts Of Disembodiment” album. The vocals consist of the ususal metalcore staples, including shrieks, rasps and more shouted parts. About halfway through it’s hard to deny Mass Hypnosis’ formulaic songwriting as each song is built up and structured exactly the same. Ultimately, Mass Hypnosis is yet another pointless band who’s entire raison d’etre is breakdowns. The scene kids, ignorant youngsters and otherwise impressionable youth might eat this up as pap. Those of us who’ve been around longer see this for what it truly is. Trendy fashionable and disposable music for the half-wit hipster crowd that’s entirely clueless real and true extreme metal entails. Avoid, at any rate.
