Midnight is a black-ish heavy/speed metal from Cleveland, Ohio consisting of Jameson ‘Athenar’ Walker (vocals, guitars/bass), Shaun ‘Filey the Kid’ Filley (guitars) and Bob ‘Count Zigar’ Zeiger (drums) that is the answer to Japanese heavyweights Abigail, Metalucifer and Barbatos or European icons such as Iron Maiden (specifically, their modest punk-ish beginnings circa “Killers” and their self-titled debut, just listen to ‘You Can’t Stop Steel’) Mötorhead, Tank or Venom. Walker’s vocals are similar to those of Deceased’s King Fowley. In a world of tribute bands and jokey side-projects, it’s good to have an honest outfit such as Midnight who, while tongue-in-cheeck with their subject matter, are musically entirely relevant in their objective to revive much more simpler and enjoyable times in their music. Where a lot of tribute – and retro-sounding acts fail is that they are ultimately copying somebody else’s work and concept to a slavish degree, without an ounce of individuality. Midnight on the other hand is genuine in their passion and that shows in spades. Everything about this right clicks, from the old school (but impressive) artwork, the bass-heavy analog production to the crispy guitar tone “Satanic Royalty” will just feel at home with fanatics of the more traditional forms of metal. In a world where music is treated as a throwaway product rather than a form of art, Midnight oppose the mainstream and attempt to infuse music with spirit again. A welcome change of pace.
