With only a dozen of bands of international appeal, reputation and meaning it is one of the most difficult of today’s market to break into. Acts as Amberian Dawn, Echoes Of Eternity, Epica, Flowing Tears, Lacuna Coil, Leaves’ Eyes, Midnattsol, Nightwish and Trail Of Tears all are accomplished outfits in their own right, they are also the only brandnames that are able to shift the required amount of units. Minded Of Heart is a gothic/symfo metal act from France. Naming Arch Enemy, Dream Theater and In Flames as primary influences it is perhaps unsurprising to see that only the Arch Enemy influence is apparent and the other two are grabbed from thin air. Compared to a lot of their peers this act is a decidedly heavier and lightly progressive affair, with actual brutal riffing and a few well-crafted leads/solos. The female vocals are adequate, but don’t excel in any shape or form, but she’s able to imbue these tracks with some semblance of emotion. While the riffing and solo’ing is a lot more ambitious than the average second-tier gothic/symfo act Minded In Heart suffer from the exact same songwriting flaws as any of their beginning contemporaries. The interaction with the harsher male vocals still needs a lot of work, the song structures don’t really go anywhere and the record has no flow whatsoever. During the 11 tracks (not couting the intro and two instrumental pieces) there isn’t a whole lot that stands out. Rather that a band chooses 8 or 9 truly exceptional (plus an intro, if need be) pieces than 14 cuts that are interchangeable at best. The mallcore/emocore artwork and design are also a questionable imagery choice. “Trust In Your Path” is everything you expect from an underground symfo metal record, including its shortcomings and budgetary restraints. Not the best, but not the worst either.
