Nuclear Salvation is a young thrash metal act out of Jönköpings, Sweden who debut with this record through their own label imprint. Nuclear Salvation continue the tradition of Swedish thrash popularized by bands such as Carnal Forge, The Crown, Defleshed, Denata and Merciless. “The Beginning Of the End” certainly isn’t too shabby, but it also begs the question why a band barely active for a year would release a full length release without testing the waters first through a demo or promotional recording. Combine that with the resurgence of all things thash of the last half decade and its clear that Nuclear Salvation will only be able to survive if they are able to modestly promote this record in their homecountry and, by extent, Europe. Given that this is the band first recording a couple of mistakes are expected and “The Beginning Of the End” doesn’t escape that particular fate. The record suffers some pacing issues and the dynamics (while workable) are rather typical of a band imitating its inspirations and influences. A more serious issue is the lack of different riffing. While all songs are groovy and dynamic Nuclear Salvation only seem to rely on a handful of interesting riffs and by the time the eight tracks of this record have passed that has become painfully clear. On the other hand this band continues the timeless art of leads/solos, which add much character to these workmanlike cuts. The pace and level of brutality is commendable, but Nuclear Salvation at no point come close to matching the sheer breakneck pace of Sepultura’s landmark “Beneath the Remains” record in terms of sheer intensity or the masterful compositions that characterized Atheist’s “Piece Of Time” or the dark atmosphere that made Dead Head’s “Dream Deceiver” an underground classic.
