Another supposed black metal supergroup, featuring Morten “Teloch” Iversen (Nidingr, Orcustus), Andreas Jonsson (Tyrant), Espen T. Hangard and Dan Lilker (Brutal Truth, Exit-13, Nuclear Assault, S.O.D.). This partnership leads to a slow building, hypnotic sort of feedback-laden funeral black metal in the tradition of Forgotten Tomb, Nortt and Xasthur. The music is mostly instrumental, on two cuts guest vocals were provided by Attila (Mayhem) and Ravn. Besides its well-known international cast of musicians there’s hardly any novelty presented here. The ponderous tempo feedback and reverb-swathed darkness is most prominent. There’s definitely some dormant potential at work, yet on this record there’s nothing done you haven’t heard before done better by dedicated outfits within this genre. As a musical experiment and technical exercise NunFuckRitual is more than a commendable effort. As a funeral black metal combo it is hardly exemplary and not nearly as mandatory or vital as the label would like you to believe. Much can be said that this sounds ritualistic, shamanesque and dark, but it also can be called pointless, egocentric and directionless. The tracks go through all the expected motions of the subgenre and while hardly amateurish in delivery, one has to wonder what was the incentive that brought this unit its recording contract. “In Bondage To the Serpent” is a competent funeral black metal record, but hardly one you need to hear.
