Forming in Sao Paulo in 1989 Pentacrostic is one of earlier South American death/doom metal bands of note, along with Chile’s Pentagram. This compilation comprises of 4 tracks of the “Welcome To the Suffering” demo from 1991, two tracks of the “The Pain Tears” 1992 demo, one track of the “Agony Of Gods” 1993 demo, two tracks of the 1996 “De Profundis” session, two tracks of 2002’s “Moments Of the Afflictions”, the 1997 “Immortality” demo, two tracks of the 2009 “The Meaning Of Life” session and a Vulcano cover (‘Fallen Angel’) as part of a tribute Pentacrostic took part in 2010. Like many bands of the period Pentacrostic are indebted to Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and the early death metal sound of Necrophagia and Possessed. In comparison to Brasil’s other popular export of the time (Sepultura) Pentacrostic isn’t nearly as dynamic nor as instrumentally gifted, focusing more on gutwrenching heaviness, depravity and dark atmosphere instead. Much like legendary Dutch death/doom icons Asphyx this band derives its strength from the creation of atmosphere instead of technical skill and instrumental mastery. The production varies from session to session, but have that echoey cavernous bass-heavy sound of the time. “The Pain Years” is an interesting historical document of the burdgeoning South American scene of the time. Released by Murder Records in cooperation with Spain’s Pathologically Explicit Recordings. While its historical significance is doubtful (bands remain obscure for a reason), it is good to hear familiar sounds from a place where extreme metal was hard to come by in the early days of the genre. Pentacrostic are worth investigating for those wanting to familiarize themselves with the ins and outs of the South American scene.
