East-Europe has always had a prominent place in death – and black metal. Raven Throne, who hail from Belarus, is no different in the sense that it is another solid addition to the Eastern hordes. “Eternal, Dark” consists mostly of midpaced and atmospheric bass-heavy black metal with sparse use of acoustics and moody organs. It is reminiscent of early Polish black metal combo Xantotol in the sense that both create a funereal gloomy atmosphere with relative modest instrumentation and eerie build up tension. Because of the increased focus on atmosphere and slow sections, the blast sections sound that more extreme when they are used. Like most East-European black metal hordes Raven Throne deliver their assault with passion and gusto. Atmosphere prevails over direct brutality and in that sense Raven Throne is far more traditional than many of their contemporaries. While delivered expertly and crafty there’s nothing very remarkable about this record or this band. The record twists and turns as is expected of this genre and the instrumentation is commendable across the board. There isn’t anything remarkable or noteworthy about this record, though. “Eternal, Dark” is - competent as it is - a pleasant experience but hardly a vital or mandatory purchase.
