The resurgence of all things neo retro-thrash has been avoid over the last 5 years and more. Bands such as Evile, Fueled By Fire, Revocation, Toxic Holocaust and Warbringer earn high marks across the media and are on important tours all over the world. It is therefore not surprising that every label, big or small, is trying to capitalize on this rampant popularity and buck in on the trend while it is still considered hot property. Portugese band Revtend is the latest (and certainly not the last, unfortunately) in a long line of bands from the underground, pledging alliance to the classic American sound. “Welcome to Hell” (a nod to Venom, maybe?) consists of rugged Bay Area thrash inspired in equal amounts by the earliest records of Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica. Like so many outfits before them Revtend present an energetic take on the genre, checking all the right boxes and sounding more than adequate at what they do, yet there’s nothing you haven’t heard a million times before by now. “Welcome to Hell” is as cliché, workmanlike and Xeroxed sounding as the title suggests. Revtend are by no means a bad band in any shape or form, but by now the retro-thrash sound as been duplicated, replicated and emaciated to such a degree that the sheer overabundance of bands of this ilk is more a curse to the genre than a blessing. Another day, another retro-thrash act, when will it finally end?
