Sceau de l’Ange is a progressive metal from France and their moniker means "Seal of the Angel" in French. There isn’t a whole lot wrong with “Phénomenes” but there isn’t a lot lot that makes it stand out either. The advanced skill level of all musicians involved is obviously of the required standard, but there are other things that keep this band from reaching a potential audience. First among these is the fact that Sceau de L’Ange has opted to perform in their native tongue. This allows them to express themselves better but also limits their audience in a rather drastic fashion. The second are the vocals, which while more than functional, aren’t very remarkable. Especially the harsher male vocal styles are lacking in both venom and bite. The female vocals are of the usual rock/pop variety and remain anonymous throughout. ‘L’Amarre aux Songes’ is an acoustic ballad of classic rock-like proportion. The guitar work channels Dire Straits’ frail ballads with its bluesy organs, early Genesis’ prog rock excursions and concludes with climactic tribal drumming laced with improvised vocal lines. If there’s one track that could be catapulted straight in the rock charts, it is this one. ‘Fil Éphémere’ has an experimental and highly effective midsection, but is bookended by rather bland prog metal otherwise an unconvincing vocals. What Sceau de L’Ange needs is a concept in which they can write their songs, with an experienced producer to help trim the fat of their repertoire and improve the vocal lines they may to able to transcend their local region. As of now “Phénomenes” offers up a worthwhile but not very exceptional platter of prog metal.
