Maryland hasn’t exactly spawned a lot of known acts in comparison to hotbeds such as California, Florida, Chicago or New York. Dying Fetus and Misery Index are perhaps the most known exports of that region, along with lesser gods such as Criminal Element and Pessimist. Visceral Disgorge is a death metal group from Baltimore, Maryland arisen out of now defunct local act Eaten Alive. The band play a rather typical form of underground gore-death in the tradition of pre-“Servile Insurrection” Severed Savior with semi-technical sections that reek of Fleshgrind, Gorgasm and Flesh Consumed and of early Deeds Of Flesh in the riffing and chord progressions. The guitar lines are fairly good if unremarkable. The addition of fiery leads/solo would definitely help further individualize these cuts. The drumming is focused and variated in its assault, not losing itself directionless blasting. The kickdrum action is reserved and very effective. The vocals aren’t too interesting, but will probably appeal to people who love former Severed Savior frontman Dusty Boisjolie. Thankfully the vocalist refrains from the usual pig squeels. A few samples are scattered through out the album, which ultimately serve no purpose and add no value whatsoever. Of all tracks ‘Necrocoprohagia’ is probably the most interestingly diverse and fully developed. Artwork created by Toshiro Egawa (Beheaded, Brutus, Internal Suffering, Krisiun, Malignancy). Logo designed by Condemned guitarist Steve Crow. Visceral Disgorge are at least more ambitious than most of their degenerate underground peers, injecting their songs with an ounce of ambition and intelligence in their dynamic scope and clever arrangements. The lyrics (judging by the songtitles) are rather typical of the genre with themes of gore, horror and mutilation. One can assume that in due course Visceral Disgorge will implement a lyrical concept of their own, as of now they are just doing it by the guidelines. “Ingesting Putridity” might not yet be a beacon of light in a scene rampant with stagnation and regression, but at least it has the decency to not insult the listener’s intelligence.
