The old school death metal revival rages ever onward… this time Finland contributes to the growing legions of neo-retro sounding acts with Vorum. This is mostly Swedish sounding death metal, including the vintage Sunlight Studio guitar tone, barked vocals that are part (early) Entombed, part Unleashed and slow grinding sections that harken to European and American institutions such as Asphyx and Autopsy, respectively. Vorum manage to sound modern in their sheer intensity and speed, blasting with the best of them. It’s their old school traits that are the most developed and mentionworthy. “Grim Death Awaits” is a record in two minds. On the one it attempts to recreate the classic Stockholm death metal sound to an unreal degree, yet the trappings of modern day death metal loom as a shadow over Vorum, as they struggle to please the modern audience with intensive blasting and atonal riffing. This makes that “Grim Death Awaits” takes neither directions to a satisfactory conclusion. One time you’ll hear a riff, a melody, a chord progression or rhythm section that recalls classic genre pieces such as “Like An Everflowing Stream”, “You’ll Never See” or “Shadows In the Deep” – the next blast section voids that by mimicking Hate Eternal, Myrkskog or Zyklon. This senseless adhering to contemporary expectations and standards effectively void whatever atmosphere the band had built up prior to said blasts. The slow sections, creepy leads/solos and atmospheric segments are hinted upon but never truly explored in favor for instant gratification through blasting. The pieces are here, Vorum only have to set them in their right place and decide whether they want to be authentic or contemporary – because frankly being both will just not work in this genre.
