Of all black metal subgenres the funeral doom kind is the least overcrowded. With institutions such as Italy’s Forgotten Tomb, Denmark’s Nortt or now defunct American icons Xasthur the standards of this subgenre are admittedly high. Hailing from the ever-fertile shores of Finland WAIL (an acronym for the album title) display a far wider musical palette than most of their peers in their take on feedback – and reverb drenched doom-laden black metal. Funeral black metal is a delicate genre to pull off correctly wit hordes either falling to the wayside by expanding too much on their black metal aspects or wandering into directionless exercises in feedback and reverb without actual songs to back up the stylings. WAIL are fairly competent at what they do and although we’ve all heard this particular subgenre before, it’s been a while since it was delivered so competently. Nothing is particularly offensive about WAIL, but there’s also precious little that makes them stand out from their peers. This is obviously a lot more doom-oriented than some of the other institutions in this genre, that is also the strength of WAIL. Being as much doom – as black metal WAIL is able to tap into the individual strengths of both genres and come out as a much more evolved unit because of it.
