Woburn House is perhaps the least extreme outfit in the Zeitgeister Music’s stable of atmospheric and dark metal acts. This record has a strong lineage to post-“The Origin Of the Feces” era Type O Negative, minus the psychedelic keyboard work and gothic/industrial rock stylings. The vocals mimick the late Peter Steele’s bass-baritone chants to an unreal degree. Woburn House is definitely the most laidback unit of the Zeitgeister stable. There are hints in “Sleep Summer Storm” of a band wanting to break away from their metal lineage. However most of the material is still too dark for conventional rock radio and airplay. It wouldn’t hurt this band to shed their last restrictive metal shackles and go for an all-out rock direction. The material on this record is convincing enough. With some additional finetuning and more conventional song structures Woburn House could easily transform itself into a standard rock band. In the current situation this band is half a rock band, half a metal band yet with either direction not fully explored this leaves “Sleep Summer Storm” an enjoyable record, if not a confused one. The recording, mixing and mastering was done at Soundsight Studios by Armin Rave of German technical death metal luminaries Pavor.
