This death metal act from Ukraine released one record prior to this one in 2008 called "Infraction Cerebral Occupation" (a title which makes no sense), which failed to make a mark in the underground scene and rightly so. "Division By Zero" is their debut for Russian label SFC Records. Like so many of this type bands working the underground scene Acephala tends to combine the worst of genres. In this particular case the Devourment-style slamdeath combined with early (but decidedly better executed) genre platters such as Internal Bleeding, circa "Voracious Contempt". The usual elements are accounted for: pig squeels, hollow sounding snare drums, blast sections, the most basic of song structure, whammy bass dives and neanderthal riffs that make Mortician sound as progressive masters in comparison. What lacks here is musicianship, song structure and the will to adhere to something else than mindless, directionless brutality and heaviness for the sake of it. "Division By Zero" is a love note to the genre for all the wrong reasons and it has therefore no appeal outside of this band's established fanbase. Stunningly unoriginality and mediocre songwriting aside on the most basic of terms Acephala are a disappointment of a death metal act. Heaviness, groove and some basic functional riffs are the only redeeming factors of this act. Absolutely nothing about this band is remarkable. Acephala are the Ukranian equivalent of bottom-feeding drivel such as Shortbus Pileup, Soaking In Entrails and genre whipping boys Waking the Cadaver.
