After one record on Razorback Records in 2008 this Michigan-based doom metal duo is now back with their second record. The intro 'Satanic Faith' reminds of the theme of Dario Argento's giallo classic "Susperia". This is traditional doom metal with psychedelic passages reminiscent of "The Ethereal Mirror" era Cathedral, Black Sabbath and the like. Like so many new acts on the scene Acid Witch is dependant on gimmicks to sell its product. Here the recurrent themes of narcotics abuse and witchcraft are what this band has based its concept around. The ghoulish vocals sound lifeless and aren't very scary nor are the riffs remotely evil sounding. The execution is fairly standard and not very exciting to those who heard or have a passing familiarity with any of the doom classics. Acid Witch is certainly heavy enough and the tripped out passages of psychedelia aren't certainly too shabby. The biggest downside is that institutions such as Yob, Esoteric and the like already did this over a decade ago without any of the gimmicks that are here painted as revolutionary improvements. There's continuous use of samples of a witchcraft documentary through out the record, which serves more to distract than to add to the authenticity. Anybody new to the underground doom metal movement might find something of interest here, those who have been around the bend longer might find this mildly enjoyable. It certainly isn't bad, but it is also far from being mandatory or vital to the doom scene.
