This EP was originally released by Heidens Hart in 2009, but is now re-issued along with a few other notable underground black metal titles. Ancestors Blood formed in 2002 in Finland and released a string of demos in 2003, 2005 and 2007. 2008 saw the release of their debut full length "Return Of the Ancient Ones" through Hammermark Art. A demo compilation followed in 2009, which brings us to our current subject. "When the Forest Calls" is quite alike to "Fatherland"-era Ancient Rites in the sense that it combines epic melodies with tasteful synthesizers that add greatly to the atmosphere which is countered by rather harsh traditional black metal. While what Ancestors Blood does is hardly new "When the Forest Calls" is a commendable little EP that will appeal to latter-day Ancient Rites fans, with that band now being on indefinite hiatus. The keyboards and synthesizers are up, front and center in the production, but fortunately are not the lead instrument. These synthesizers function to amplify the atmosphere and mood, never functioning as a smokescreen to mask poor songwriting and lacking skills. On the contrary much like (early) Emperor these synthesizers add to the gloom present in these cuts. Unlike the Cradle Of Filth's and Dimmu Borgir's of this world, the keyboards here never get sappy or overbearing that the songwriting suffers from it. In regards to production this EP is actually quite accomplished. The guitar tone is clear and crisp, the bass guitar features prominently and the drums sound powerful and battering. All in all, Ancestors Blood have delivered a commendable EP. Hopefully their second full length will deliver on the promise of these tracks.
