Existing as a black/thrash sideproject to their main musical outlet Fortid this act is best approached and seen at face value. Curse performs a loose take on the early black metal – and Australian war metal sound. "Void Above, Abyss Below" is however not nearly as abrasive nor as speed-oriented as one would reasonably expect with a musical package like this. The second half of the album notably slows things down with some more classic metal leanings coming to the surface. This second half is far more darker and moody than the first half, which focuses greatly on visceral impact. Thorberg's vocals still sound a like rabid mix between Abbath (Immortal) and Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven (Satyricon). Like Fortid this project was initially based in Iceland, but relocated to Norway in late 2008. Einar "Eldur" Thorberg and Daniel Theobald (ex-Pantheon I) display a very different musical persona compared to that of their main band, but the question remains whether every sideproject deserves to worldwide release. The record's biggest problem is its inconsistency in what it aims to be. The first half is mainly comprised of violent and loosely played black/thrash, while the second half leans more towards doom – and sludgier forms of metal. This is the band's third record in a 12 year career, but the Fortid remains the strongest outfit this duo is involved in.
