Doom metal usually tends to be categorized in three general forms: the gloomy funeral kind (Evoken, Thergothon), the classical kind (Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus) or the romantic kind (My Dying Bride, Theater Of Tragedy). This one-man act from the Azores Islands is very akin to Mar de Grises and mid period My Dying Bride ("The Angel and the Dark River", "Like Gods Of the Sun"), and thus falls firmly into the third format. A Dream Of Poe is the solo project of Miguel Santos from the other Azorean Islands doom act In Peccatum. The profound My Dying Bride influence becomes clear in the riffs, chord progressions and melodies all while retaining the somberly romantic atmosphere the noble Englishmen created the genre's template for. In generalist terms A Dream Of Poe is the lighter and more classical oriented variant of the two projects. Notably lighter in terms of sheer heaviness "The Mirror Of Deliverance" is also more emotional than In Peccatum's body of work. The soaring clean vocals by singer Joao Melo immediately raise this act above the usual grunt-oriented counterparts. The lush use of acoustic motifs and ethnic instrumentation make this sound more miditterrean than the usual damp bleakness inherent to this genre. Where a lot of underground doom acts fall victim to directionless monotony A Dream Of Poe is able to keep their slow meandering, ponderous doom interesting for the experienced as well for the novice listener. For a debut "The Mirror Of Deliverance" ticks all the right boxes and shows enough potential for an even greater second opus. It wouldn't hurt to add some general heaviness and to further explore the Miditerrean melodies and instrumentation hinted upon here.
