This Dutch black/thrash/punk metal band has supposedly been around for a decade and a half, now their most important tracks are compiled for historic value on this "Praising Satan" restrospective. This compilation contains 8 tracks from the Splitting Skulls For Satan CD, two tracks recorded exclusively for this release and three tracks taken from the Hellfire Satanist single and 7" single splits with Barbatos and Capatis Bamnare. There's a particular charm in the Venom inspired material on this compilation, the vocals are clearly punk and the loose and fast playing is reminiscent of Sex Pistols. Heretic is a band that derives most of its strengths from its tongue-in-cheek nature and ridiculing imagery and lyrical concepts popularly associated with black metal. "Praising Satan" certainly is a fun little record, but has absolutely no historical significance for the genre as a whole. As a love note to a local it serves its purpose rather well. There isn't a whole lot of variation and Heretic aren't the best of musicians or songwriters to compensate otherwise for this lack of variation. This is a band that finds its strength in its dedication to their craft and the visceral intensity of the proceedings. There isn't a whole to describe in this album as Heretic undoubtly shines in the live arena and possibly consider the recording studio nothing but an occupational hazard. Fans of Barathrum, Nifelheim and Bewitched might find this of interest.
