Since coming into its most recognizable and most poignant form in Scandinavia in the late '80s/early '90s black metal has sprang up all over the globe. While Scandinavia has remained a mainstay in providing the hordes Hellas (Greece), France and Germany have had their share in the pie as well. While France has carved out a niche all its own in the millennium Germany has, generally, been content to ape its Scandinavian forefathers. Infestus is a one-man black metal project from Bavaria, Germany headed up by Donkelfront member Andras. His is a pondering, atmospherically rich form of black metal that is indebted to doom metal in its extended wanderings and use of melodies while retaining a decidedly Swedish tone of riffing. The influences come from various regions and scene but Infestus manage to take these individual parts and combine them in a bleak doom-laden assault that truly its all-encompassing its darkness. Where a lot of underground black metal hordes specialize in making their assault the fastest or the murkiest Infestus has both interesting dynamics (alternating between doom sections and blast parts) and a more than capable production that emphasizes the musical skill of its creator. Germany, just like France, has carved out a place on the international black metal map and Infestus is another good reason why. "Ex|Ist" is by no means a game changer, but it definitely is a strong black metal record on its own merits. One can only hope that composer Andras continues to evolve at this rate. That would indicate that Infestus is one of the uprising hordes in the international scene. They definitely deserve a break. Debemur Morti Productions has once again managed to unearth a hidden gem within the underground.
