There isn't any notable Canadian black metal to speak of, save for the more symphonic counterpart at which Artep excels. "Anoited With the Blood Of Chaos" is far more primitive and typical example of the genre, adhering to the template founded by Immortal on "Pure Holocaust" and the early records by Mayhem and Gorgoroth. Originally this EP was released in limited number in 2009, but it is now duly re-issued by Finnish black metal specialist label Ahdistuksen Aihio Productions. Insidious Omen, despite their death metal sounding moniker, follows closely the Nordic tradition of this genre. Like many of their European counterparts (Dark Funeral, Enthroned, Sammath, etc) Insidious Omen mostly build their assault around speed and as a result most of the tracks of this EP tend to bleed together in an unrelenting maelstrom of blastbeats, razorwire guitars and shrieks. Unlike the masters of this genre Insidious Omen don't integrate any underlying melodies, memorable dynamics or recognizable hooks to make their songs stand out from the many hordes pledging alliance to this particular subgenre. Unlike their Australian brethren no attempts are made to individualize or differentiate themselves from their Scandinavian counterparts. The logo is also strikingly similar to that of US death metal project Insidious Descrepancy. Overall this makes "Anoited With the Blood Of Chaos" an obligatory and tired sounding affair that checks the expected boxes of the genre, but does nothing of note with these elements. As such Insidious Omen are yet another corpse-painted horde of the underground that will be overlooked in favor of the veterans of this genre and many bands that are, frankly, just better than they are.
