Forming in 1998 in Birmingham, UK the grinders of Lock Up are one of the original and earlier supergroups, consisting of Napalm Death, Cradle Of Filth, Hypocrisy members (Peter Tägtgren sang on the 1999 debut) and At the Gates, Disfear and former The Crown vocalist Tomas Lindberg. After releasing two records of straight up grindcore (1999's "Pleasure Pave Sewers" and 2002's "Hate Breeds Suffering") and a live album in 2005 ("Play Fast... or Die – Live in Japan") Lock Up experienced a phase of inactivity as members tended to their main projects. This third album goes for a more old school death metal sound. The tempo is high, Lindberg's vocals are as pissed off as ever and the dynamics remind of (early) Napalm Death. It's great to see Nick Barker (ex-Cradle Of Filth, ex-Dimmu Borgir, ex-Leaves' Eyes) in a band again. 'The Embodiment Of Paradox and Chaos', 'Parasite Drama', 'Unseen Enemy' and 'Discharge the Fear' feature guest vocals from Jeff Walker (Carcass) while Peter Tägtgren provides guest vocals on the title track and 'Through the Eyes Of My Shadow Self'. The production courtesy of HVR Studios, Ipswich with engineer/producer Danny Biggin and a high end mixing job by Andy Sneap at Backstage Studios make this the most pristine Lock Up record to date. Overall, this record is more straight up death metal with grind leanings, which is a slight reversal compared to earlier records. Nevertheless Lock Up manage to sound as viscerally intense, contemporary and vital as ever. The stunning artwork is a definite plus.
