After their low-profile "From the Womb to the Tomb" debut in 2009 these Swedish death metallers return on Soulseller Records with "Deceased to Exist". Hailing from Linköping and consisting of nobody you ever heard of Maim pledge alliance to the early gods and the Stockholm sound of the late '80s/early '90s. Everything about this act looks as if they have their heart in the right spot, their influences on their sleeves and they honestly care about the thing they are doing. The gravel-throated vocals remind of (early) Entombed and Unleashed. Their logo is clearly based upon that of Swedish proto-death metallers Nihilist. The general execution reeks of (early) Grave, Necrophobic, Dismember and Unleashed. The guitar tone is vintage Swedish death metal, the drums and bass guitar are cranked up to a healthy degree and provide much of Maim's bowel-rendering heaviness. "Deceased to Exist" is more than just a tribute record to the Swedish death metal sound of yore, it is an opus that groves that the old corpse is yet to give up the ghost. Even int today's scene of ever-more sterile productions and same-sounding bands Maim are a metallic fist in the face of mediocrity. What they do is not new, what they do has certainly been done before – but they do it with such gusto and passion that they could easily be mistaken for any of the pioneers of this genre. The artwork isn't very special, but at least attempts to recreate the abstract visions of death made popular by Dan Seagrave, Wes Benscoter and similar artists of the day. The production is fittingly gritty and grisly, reminiscent of the classic Sunlight Studio sound. In an ever-increasing scene of old school tribute bands Maim is one of the better ones. Keep on rotting!
