Since the second wave of black metal with institutions hailing from Scandinavia, central Europe and Hellas, there hasn't been a lot of note besides the resurgence of the French scene the last couple of years. Morbid Fog hail from Greece, but unlike early veterans Necromantia and Rotting Christ, theirs is a style completely trapped in its obvious demo phase mentality and complete lack of individual mindset. The guitar tone and programmed drums recall Mayhem's earliest pioneering recordings ("Deathcrush", "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas") while the shrieking vocals are reminiscent of early Graveland and the like. The dynamics and songstructures are basic at best, consisting mostly of simple point-and-counterpoint progressions. The lack of exciting riffs (on either bass or guitars) along with the headstrong practice of using one or two riffs per song and the primitive drumming make "Aggelon Apokathilosis" are tired and tiring affair. The convincingly spooky intro and title track initially make this sound promising, but ultimately only serves to pad out the running time. 'Mocking the Holy Faith' starts off with a gloomy Gregorian monk chant, but like the tracks before this cut quickly falls back into the same errors as its predecessors. Morbid Fog are currently finalizing the follow-up EP "Frozen Landscapes Of the North" and hopefully they'll have rectified some of the beginner's mistakes on this EP.
