Little over a decade and a half ago one could easily categorize a band going from the way they sounded. In today's increasing climate of globalization this is becoming less and less obvious as bands are no longer tied to their geography and the metallic sounds of their region. Case in point is Greek black/thrashers Ravencult, who sound like they'd hail either from the sunburned Australian outbacks or the eternal frozen plains of Scandinavia. Thus it comes as no surprise that "Morbid Blood" sounds like an unholy alliance of Deströyer 666, Gospel Of the Horns, Nifelheim, Bewitched and Barathrum. The riffs and melodies are eerily Scandinavian, while the general execution and demonic vocal delivery is typically Australian. Where a lot of underground acts tend to fall victim to directionless blasting Ravencult change up their assault enough to remain interesting through out. Instead of flat blasting these songs twist and turn in the expected and unexpected ways. As far as head-on intensity is concerned Ravencult are heavily indebted to the Australian war-metal scene, whereas the cold atmosphere and decidedly Scandinavian riffing make this package wholly European. The production sits somewhere between Immortal's "Pure Holocaust" and "Battles In the North" records with a drumsound reminiscent of an early Slayer album ("Hell Awaits"). The handdrawn artwork is pretty amazing in composition and detail. "Morbid Blood" does nothing new, but what it delivers can certainly hold a blood-filled cup to the masters of this scene.
