Forming in 2007 in death metal hotbed Sweden "Pervertopia" is Repuked's first official recording after a pair of locally released demo sessions. This debut is an inebriated mix of classic Stockholm death metal, d-beat and punk ethics. It is a scatological mix between (early) Entombed, Repulsion and Autopsy. The vocals mimic Chris Reifert in about every way. The abundance of samples makes clear this is meant to be a fun project, but the overusage of samples in underground metal has run its course now for a number of years already. Usually these samples are used to mask a poor musical package as if often the case with the bands using them. The screechy production is deliciously lo-fi and recalls the vibe of Autopsy's "Mental Funeral" on a number of occassions. The handdrawn artwork is good for what it is, but not exceptional in any way. The band logo is also quite similar to that of Polish death metallers Masachist. The biggest disadvantage is the tribute nature of these copycat bands. There's no incentive nor ambition beyond mimicking what their inspirations established years ago, therefore they serve no other purpose than functioning as a glorified gateway for fans to discover the true pioneers who these bands invariably ape. Singularly devoid of any identity of their own Repuked is the embodiment of everything that is wrong with the majority of the underground today. Apparently everything has to be a carbon-copy of something before it, with no defining traits whatsoever. This is a record of half-realized concepts, ideas and thematics thrown together in the hopes that anything would stick. As such it is directionless, bland and painfully mediocre. A nice little throwback record, for sure, but in a few short years from now nobody will remember this act… and rightfully so.
