Rogga Johansson must be the most productive individual in the whole of Sweden, with exception of Christian Älvestam and producer Peter Tägtgren. Besides his involvement in his two main acts (Paganizer, Ribspreader), he also has a creative hand in international studio acts such as Banished From Inferno, Bone Gnawer, The Grotesquery, Putrevore, Demiurg, Foreboding and The 11th Hour, amongst others. "The Van Murder" – album number four under the Ribspreader banner – chronicles the life and work of two fictional serial murderers in the first of what is promised to be a series of concept records about the subject. The album is typical of what Johansson has made his signature style. This is bare bones, no-frills Swedish death metal in the vein of (early) Dismember, Grave and Unleashed. Impetigo's Patrick Bruss provided leads/solos for this record, alongside mixing/mastering duties at his Filth Chamber in Denver, Colorado. In comparison to the rest of Ribspreader's catalogue, this one sounds a lot like their "Bolted To the Cross" debut. As always with Johansson everything is delivered expertly, the only pressing question is how long Johansson can keep up with this pace in writing and releasing albums in such consistent fashion with all his different bands and projects. Nevertheless, "The Van Murders" is another solid addition to the Ribspreader catalogue and an album that will appeal to both new and old fans of this particular genre.
