Moscow, Russia-based Scrambled Defuncts are the underground answer to more mainstream accepted orchestral acts such as Hollenthon. Like that Austrian band Scrambled Defuncts combine lush orchestral segments (including strings, piano, brass and trumpets) with blasting death metal of the Unique Leader variety, reminiscent of (early) Decrepit Birth, Deeds Of Flesh, Spawn Of Possession and the likes. Unlike, say, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Nile and Hollenthon these segments contribute to the tracks at hand and not serve as mere windowdressing. Traditional genre fans could be put off by this untypical combination of orchestral chamber music and cunning death metal that sounds as a solid mix of US and European styles. Death metal is still the main ingredient of this record and on that aspect Scrambled Defuncts are clearly an experienced unit. Combining the intensity of "…And Time Begins"-era Decrepit Birth with the riff-torrent approach of "Trading Pieces"-era Deeds Of Flesh and the dynamic and structural ambition of Spawn Of Possession, circa "Cabinet" this record is definitely not for the unacquainted or the novice listener. Scrambled Defuncts forgets not to slow down every once in a while and let a ripping lead/solo carry the material to another level. It's clear that despite the prominent nature of the orchestral pieces the tracks are able to stand on their merits stripped off these elements. Whether or not Scrambled Defuncts is able to translate this into the live arena remains to be seen. It's brazen, it's brutal and it's progressive in the right proportion. It's been a while since a breeze of originality has blown through the underground death metal scene, Scrambled Defuncts are at the forefront of trying something new within an admittedly stale genre.
