Subliritum is a melodic black metal combo from Trondheim, Norway featuring members from Keep Of Kalessin and Bloodthorn that carries on the tradition and legacy of bands such as Dissection, Soulreaper and (to a lesser degree) Mutant. The foundation of this record is found in Dissection's "The Somberlain" and "Storm Of the Light's Bane" records with the undercurrent of technical symphonic black metal that Theory In Practice side-project Mutant made famous with their sole album "The Aeonic Majesty". The light progressive leanings remind a bit of Emperor, but it is never the focus of the music. The vocals are the usual mix of grunts, rasps and the sparse clean sung sections. The guitar playing is quite interesting in its mix of death -, black – and progressive metal chops with neo-classical leads/solos and fine harmonies. The bass guitar is virtually inaudible, thus it is hard to tell what the band does with it, except providing bottom end heaviness. The drumming is functional, but underwhelming compared to the other instruments. As always with records of this kind, there's a whole lot of something, but never enough of anything to be truly convincing. This type mix of death-, black- metal and progressive metal is hardly new and many bands a decade ago already laid the groundwork for this particular subgenre. Musically "A Touch Of Death" isn't anything to complain about, yet conceptuall or thematically there's nothing to be found of interest here. Like so many bands before them Subliritum add nothing to a genre already oversaturated by the mediocre. Despite their established membership and more than commendable musical chops "A Touch Of Death" is nothing but warmed-up rehash of a genre that was pioneering 15 years ago when the original masters popularized it in their own revolutionizing ways. Fans of the genre might find this interest, the jaded and more experienced metal lover has heard this all before a long time ago.
