The oddly named Vowels is a black metal band from Italy. Compared to a lot of its peers Vowels is not as speed-oriented instead opting for a more deliberately paced, semi-doom metal approach. The general approach and delivery is not unlike shoegaze, with extended vocal-free sections with wandering melodies, acoustics and instrumental interplay that feels almost improvised. The vocals are typically demonic rasps and not really significant in any way. Everything about Vowels screams that it is more than the sum of its parts and that the links to black metal are vestigial at best. Beneath the surface of these songs boils something better, grander and more mature than what it currently is confident enough to show. It would be beneficial for Vowels to shed its black metal trappings (including the imagery associated with it) and fully embrace their blooming compositional potential and work that promise to the fullest extent. The production courtesy of Music City Studio is astoundingly well balanced and startlingly heavy, possessing a great deal of clarity and each instrument lies sufficiently in the mix with the drums and bass guitar featuring prominently. As of now Vowels is a promising outfit trapped within the imposing limitations of their chosen genre. With the right amount of time and experience they should be able to grow into something far more ambitious and interesting than merely pondering atmospheric black metal.
