Sweden has played an important role in the formation and evolution of melodic death metal. Particularly Gothenburg was instrumental in that respect, Anachronaeon are a studio duo hailing from Västeras. "The Futile Quest..." is the duo's third album since forming in 2003, but it might very well be their first. Where many Swedish bands have excelled in writing some superb music within this particular subgenre Anachronaeon don't quite live up to collective reputation of their many countrymates. The dynamics are lacking, the arrangements are amateurish and nowhere do this duo sound ravenous or hostile. Nothing about this record stands out in any remarkable way. This is certainly a farcry from the legendary Swedish melodic death metal sound of old, nowhere does this even approach the mastery of the earliest releases by bands such as At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames or Necrophobic. Had this been released as an independent demo then its sonic limitations could be understood and even pardoned. The production is flat and lifeless sounding more like a remastered demo than an actual label issued release. While many young acts suffer from subpar production early in their career, it is simply inexcuseable for an act that has been around for nearly a decade. Stygian Crypt Productions normally have a nose for quality underground acts, with this release they obviously missed the mark and standard we've come to expect of them.
