After their "Promo 2010" these Lombardy, Italy-based death metallers now debut internationally with "Death Squad". Sounding as a primitive mix between the proto-slam death of Internal Bleeding ("Voracious Contempt") and the chunkiness of early Cannibal Corpse ("Butchered at Birth") Brutal Murder don't possess the great songwriting chops nor the technical skill to pull off such combination effectively. The vocals of Simone Esposito are reminiscent of early Sinister in their diabolic ghoulishness and rabid ferocity. In its blunt aggression and visceral intensity Brutal Murder is similar to long-running Italian deathcore act Undertakers. Like their peers in Nalvage "Death Squad" is hardly memorable and the band's only rudimentary knowledge of the English language (resulting in grammatical errors and bad spelling) only sets them back further. The use of idiotic samples, of the usual horror – and porn variety, don't work in their advantage either. The use of samples got old and tiring when Mortician did it for the second time with their 1996 album "Hacked Up For Barbecue" – now more than a decade later it still doesn't add anything to a questionable genre record. The band stomp, grind, gurgle and burp their way through the 10 cuts of this record, yet never do they approach or even come close to doing some similar to the masters of this genre. There's no flow to this record and the songs are hardly structured to be recognizable or remembered afterwards. Recorded at Alpha Omega Studio the production is fittingly heavy and crushing. The cover art by Nerve Design is good but isn't very special either. Brutal Murder seem the Italian answer to bottomfeeding "brutal" acts such as Condemned, Soaking In Entrails, Waking the Cadaver and its international offshoots. Every few years the global underground sees some excellent bands surfacing, Brutal Murder is not one of them. The uniformly subpar to terrible execution make this a record that is better avoided in favor for established Italian acts such as Hour Of Penance and the likes.
