In contrary to the look of things Children Of Megaton are not an industrial band, but a black metal act from Barzano, Italy. This is a conceptual record about alien invasion, nuclear holocaust and the breakdown of societal structure. The vocals are in vein of Ihsahn's early work with Emperor. Despite the band's obvious shortcomings as a demo act, the promise of "End Of All Times" is apparent. The dynamics, chord progressions and general level of composition is far above those of their peers. The tasteful use of orchestral samples give this an aura of early Emperor, circa "Wrath Of the Tyrant". For demo standards "End Of All Times" is a well-executed product and very commendable as such. If they want to compete with the more established names in this genre then the band should open up its compositions, write more expansive arrangements and record their material outside of their home studio. The production is typically lo-fi in the genre's more underground traditions. The guitar tone is okay, but the drums sound terrible. The powerless kickdrums sound too light and add no heaviness whatsoever, while the snare drums sound hollow. The cymbals are nearly inaudible at any point. If this band would record in a professional studio (16th Cellar, or so) environment the results could be phenomenal. The artwork, design and lay-out fit excellent with the band's lyrical content. At this point this band is at a crossroad of sorts, being able to evolve and grow beyond its demo phase into an actual promising outfit of international potential and merit, or remain sturdy in their convictions and thus limit themselves exclusively to the outer peripheries of the underground. Only time will tell...
