Dark Order is a thrash metal band from Sydney, New South Wales (Australia) that sounds like pre-"Divine Intervention" era Slayer, pre-"Black Album" era Metallica with a dose of the technicality and progressive mindedness of pre-"Chaos AD" era Sepultura. The record deals with the historical and military background of Chilean army general and president Augusto José Ramón Pinochet and his fascist dictatorial regime. Raul Ignacio Alvarez Garcia (vocals, guitars) is a deadringer for Slayer's Tom Araya, especially in his vocal intensity and tendency to spit a lot of lyrics in the shortest timespan. The backing vocals of bassist Sean Veale are of the more hardcore variety. The leads/solos feature prominently and they are either chaotic like Slayer stringsman Kerry King or more elaborate such as Sepultura's Andreas Kisser in its pre-Derrick Green era. Unlike its inspirations Dark Order occasionally get repetitive as not all their songs warrant their full 5 or 7 minutes length. The artwork, design and lay-out aren't very good – but the military theme that runs through out is very fitting. Overall "Cold War Of the Condor" is a solid traditional thrash record that hits all the right spots. With Slayer, Sepultura and Metallica being in a creative dryspell for the last decade and a half, it's good to hear a relatively young act showing the masters how this genre is supposed to be executed.
