California is without a doubt the new haven for technically proficient, forward thinking or just unabashedly brutal death metal along with established capitals such as Florida, New York, Chicago, the Carolinas and Texas. Prior to this offering Embryonic Devourment released "Fear Of Reality Exceeds Fantasy" which dealt with the typical genre subjects of death, horror and mutilation – this new platter sees the band integrating a far more original lyrical concept. "Vivid Interpretations Of the Void" deals with the Reptillian Agenda inspired by the theories and books of David Icke. At the heart of his theories lies the idea that a secret group of reptilian humanoids called the Babylonian Brotherhood controls humanity, and that many prominent figures are reptilian. Unlike their contemporaries Embryonic Devourment isn't afraid to slow down and to let their songs breath and evolve. The headspinning dynamics, torrential riffing, progressive sections and crushing grooves make this a record that is at once cutting edge modern while respecting the genre's older traits. The lead and solo work of both guitarists is more than commendable, while bassist/vocalist Austin Spence occasionally gets his moment in the spotlight as well. The dual vocals combine grunts with serpentine rasps. Recorded at Trident Studio in Pacheco, California with Juan Urteaga (Vile) at the helm this record comes with a clean crunchy bass-heavy production that highlights the many intricacies of the music while staying heavy and clear through out. The marvellous artwork, design and lay-out by Remy C at Headsplit Design is rife with elaborate details, is painstakingly composed and can easily be put next to Dan Seagrave's best work. It's apparent that many death metal acts are shedding the genre's more trapping limitations in favor of something altogether more malign. Superb!
