Evocation are one of the original death metal bands from Gothenburg, Sweden, forming in 1991 but going on hiatus in 1993 due to creative differences. While Gothenburg has come to be associated with more the more melodic strain of death metal, Evocation is anything but that. As expected "Apocalyptic" is rife with traditional Stockholm death metal that reeks of Dismember, Grave, Necrophobic and Unleashed with the melody of (early) In Flames. Like its inspirations (and then-contemporaries) Evocation play a much simpler and straightforward take on the genre. This coupled with recognizable hooks and crunchy riffing leads to a more than decent traditional death metal record. The vocals are similar to Jeff Walker on Carcass' "Heartwork". In today's scene of clinical and flat productions it's good to hear the warm production that this record brings. While being entirely self-recorded it reeks of the classic Sunlight Studios sound that was popularized in the early '90s by producer Tomas Skogsberg. The cover artwork was created by Xaay (Behemoth, Cerebrum, Nile, Vader). Limited edition comes with a bonus DVD, capturing the band's set at Summer Breeze 2009. "Apocalyptic" certainly won't go down in the history books as a record that reignited a genre, but it is a more than commendable take on it.
