Symphonic death/black metal in the vein of Crionics, Devilish Impressions, etc. Gloria Morti are hardly newcomers, as they have been around since 1999. After cutting a number of demos in their early years the band has been releasing album pretty consistently. Like many in this genre Gloria Morti combine death metal heaviness with symphonic black metal stylings reminiscent of Emperor, but not nearly as progressive and compositionally accomplished. "Anthems Of Annihilation" is a solid and respectable record that never truly surprises. As many of their peers Gloria Morti have written a number of whirlwind tracks of incredible speed, technical finesse, vocal acrobacy and rampant synthetics but never goes this record beyond what is expected of it. At any rate this is probably what Dimmu Borgir could have sounded like had Nick Barker remained behind the drumkit. As an unofficial successor to "Death Cult Armageddon" this record works rather sublimely. Recorded SoundSpiral Studios with Juho Räihä the production is fantastic with all instruments clearly in the mix. Mastered at Chartmakers by Svante Forsbäck. "Anthems Of Annihilation" won't go down the history books as a mandatory or vital record in the genre, but it nevertheless is a respectful but unsurprising offer that will appeal to fans of both death metal and symphonic black metal.
