Besides Dawn of Winter, Mirror of Deception is Germany's longest running traditional doom metal act, having formed in 1990. "A Smouldering Fire" is the band's fourth album to date and their second release for Cyclone Empire Records. Much like Candlemass, St. Vitus, Revelation, Trouble and Solitude Aeturnus this act plays traditional doom metal with a clear current of heavy metal running through out. For doom terms Mirror Of Deception is quite energetic and uptempo, the Black Sabbath influence is hard to deny. The vocals are okay, but no match for soaring clean vocals which would have fitted even better. In its slower moments Mirror Of Deception prove why they are Germany's best kept doom secret. These sections are majestic but incredibly morose in their restrained brutality. "A Smouldering Fire" was recorded at Soundmann Studio in Stuttgart, Germany. The production is quite minimal while retaining enough bass-heaviness. It is quite Spartan in fulfilling its basic requisites but is fitting for the record. The guitars sound crunchy and the drums sound massive. There are two versions of this album, one being the regular CD and a digipack containing the "The First 2 Decades" bonus CD.
