Despite hailing from Fontana, California Nocturnal Blood sound anything like the sound this state has become associated with over the last decade, be that incredibly brutal but technically flawless death metal with a sense of moderncy. "Devastated Graves" sounds as if it was unearthed somewhere in the desolate, windblown and ungentle fields of Australia. Nocturnal Blood specialize in war-like and chaotic death/black metal that isn't practiced that much anymore in the US. It is stylistically similar to early Australian war-metal acts such as Bestial Warlust and Corpse Molestation. Nocturnal Blood makes no pretense is have any other objective than to deliver the most primal, unearthly and disturbing death metal possible. The spirit of early British and American death metal is clearly felt through out this record. Finally there's a band that reinstates darkness, hatefulness and a sadistic level in riffing and arrangements, something which the death metal genre lost over the last decade. There's little variation between any of these tracks, but the convincing execution and menacing atmosphere complement what otherwise would have been billed as a redundant record. This record is a perfect fit with the earlier released Denouncement Pyre, who play a far more controlled and better produced incarnation of this subgenre. As noted the production expected necro, meaning it is lo-fi, muffled and more akin to a demo tape than actual label issued release.
