Non Opus Dei don't sound anything like many of their peers. This is more forward thinking and progressive oriented black metal from Olsztyn, Poland. Non Opus Dei is featuring members from grindcore acts Antigama and Third Degree and this is instantly clear from the busy and more complicated riffing. The vocals are somewhere between Jeff Walker of Carcass ("Heartwork") and Abbath's early work with Immortal ("Pure Holocaust"). Sung alternately in Polish and English "Eternal Circle" deals with the eternal return, a concept which posits that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times. With the decline of antiquity and the spread of Christianity, the concept fell into disuse, though Friedrich Nietzsche resurrected it. Compared to more traditional sounding black metal acts Non Opus Dei are far more technical with layered rhythm sections, death metal drumming and progressive leanings that add additional complexity to the dynamics. Despite playing at a neckbreaking pace Non Opus Dei never sound sloppy or out-of-control, "Eternal Circle" is a work of controlled chaos. The album was recorded at Bat Studio and Studio X by the band's own Szymon Czech, who in the past already worked with Dies Irae, Vader and Vesania. The artwork and design was handled by Bartek Rogalewicz. "Eternal Circle" comes highly recommended for those who like their black metal more intelligent and sophisticated.
