Like their "The Streams Of the End" and "The Womb Of Primordial Nature" this third record of Finland's October Falls combines atmospheric black metal with acoustic elements of folk – and pagan metal. Influences in instrumentation and composition of early Borknagar, Vintersorg and to a lesser extent "Shadowthrone" era Satyricon are still prevalent. The alternating levels of light and dark, warm and cold are still the highlight of these tracks, who take their time to build into a climax. The great use of acoustics add power to the metallic sections. Where many underground black metal acts fall into directionless brutality and reduce their assault to a formless mass, this act reinstates strong songwriting with captivating atmospheres and contrasting segments of light and dark. Like the old masters October Falls are able to recreate an authentic Scandinavian feel through the use of acoustics, ethnic melodies and an approach that lets their songcraft take the focus instead of trying to sound the darkest or most evil, as most acts in this genre tend to do. The production is high end with a very distinct and clear-cut guitar tone for both the acoustic and electronic guitars. The drums sound warm and organic and the bass is in there as well. Artwork, design and lay-out are nothing short of impressive.
