Fall, Obsidian Night ()

On their third record this French act seems to finally found their voice. "Fall, Obsidian Night" consists of symphonic funeral doom metal much like Finnish genre icons Shape Of Despair or Holland's melodic doom combo Officium Triste. The majority of the vocals consist of bestial grunts by guitarist Matthieu Sachs yet the right amount of variation is offered by the regular female vocals of keyboardist/bassist and lyricist Carline Van Roos. Her vocals are more than okay, but they don't quite have the range of some of her peers in the genre. Like Shape Of Despair this band combines parts of desolate funeral doom metal with frail acoustics, soothing keyboard and piano segments. The production is similar to Shape Of Despair's "Shades Of..." debut. Drums recorded at Rosenquarz Studio in Lübeck, Germany. The splendid artwork, somewhat similar to Solitude Aeturnus' 2006 album "Alone", was provided by Geert van Mook. This album is released as a digipack with a 8 pages booklet. Overall "Fall, Obsidian Night" is a strong but non-descript effort in this genre.
