On their fifth record (their third for Soulseller Records) Telemark, Norway-based black metallers Svartahrid stay loyal to the direction of their past records. Like "Malicious Pride" before it "Ex Inferi" can be summed up as a mix of (early) Enslaved, Lord Belial combined with the sorrowful majesty of (early) Satyricon. Svartahrid refuse to play at constant topspeed and their songs are so much better for it. The trollish vocals, the sparse use of light melodies, the excellent dynamics and the resultant dark atmosphere remind of the earlier Norwegian contributions to this genre. Where many bands fail to capture the true Nordic atmosphere Svartahrid have it in spades and are not afraid to show it. The production is warm and typically Scandinavian. Recorded at Akkerhaugen Lydstudio with Thorbjorn Akkerhaugen the production is similar to Emperor's "IX Equilibrium". Mastered by Tom Kvalsvoll at Strype Audio, Oslo (Emperor, Limbonic Art, Valborg, Zyklon). The artwork is a painting of French artist Paul Gustave Doré who is popular in this genre. A lot of Norwegian black metal bands have changed direction, lost touch with their initial inspirations or split altogether. Svartahrid continue to deliver the classic Norwegian sound that not heard that often anymore these days.
