Pennsylvania/New Jersey death metallers Blasphemous adhere to the classic death/doom sound of the likes of Asphyx, Death, Incantation, Morbid Angel and (early) Obituary. Having released a demo and one full length prior - in 2005 and 2008, respectively – Blasphemous nevertheless manage to sound tight-knit and together. This is slow to midpaced death metal that concentrates on unearthly grooves, stomping brutality and dark atmospheres instead of sterile technical wizardry. Where most of their contemporaries go for the jugular with insane speed - or guttural slam sections Blasphemous create death metal of an older generation. Some will pass this off as Neanderthal death metal, while others will find a very interesting traditional sounding outfit here. "Bearer Of the Darkest Plagues" isn't yet on the same level of composition as some of the early pioneers of the genre, but Blasphemous is one of the better additions to the resurgent old school death metal movement. The production is especially reminiscent of the classic death metal records of the early 1990s, which only adds to the charm and authenticity. The handdrawn artwork is fantastic.
