North Carolina journeyman bassist Joe Payne (Divine Heresy, ex-Lecherous Nocturne, ex-Lust Of Decay, Nile touring bass) returns after a five year hiatus with the follow-up to "Essence Of Brutality" on the label of Deaden/Lividity frontman Von Young. Drummer Jordan Varela is far more controlled and restrained here compared to his past records. Payne here presents choppy technical death metal with whirling riffing and his Jared Anderson-like commanding vocals. The leads/solos take a prominent place within these cuts and while these songs bounce around wildly they fail to leave a lasting impression. In fact despite myriad tempo changes and evolving dynamics it's hard to tell these songs apart in the long run. The instrumental acoustic piece 'The Cruel Hand Of Fate' is mesmerizing in its simplicity and emotion. "Masochist" is a solid record through and through, yet beyond the impressive technical skill to pull a thing like this off, there's little to remember once the brutality has worn off. The artwork is good, but isn't exactly eye-catching either. Fans of Necrophagist and Aeon might find this of interest.
