After three records on French label Listenable Records New York death metal veterans Immolation now are back on German mega-label Nuclear Blast Records. The band's last two records weren't especially memorable, albeit 2007's "Shadows In the Light" was a return to form of sorts. "Majesty and Decay" is the heaviest and most complex record the band has done since their breakthrough album "Unholy Cult". Drummer Steve Shalaty has finally come into his own and, although he's still no match for Alex Hernandez, his work behind the kit is now more together and massive than ever. Ross Dolan is his usual self, delivering his monstreous grunts in perfect clarity. Robert Vigna (guitars) delivers an avalanche of ripping riffs and spectacular extended leads/solos. The pumping bass-heavy production is hands down the best Immolation has ever had, which speaks volumes of the mixing and mastering done by Zach Ohren at Castle Ultimate Studio, California (Brain Drill, Decrepit Birth, Suffocation). The fabulous artwork, design and lay-out by Pär Oloffson (Brain Drill, Condemned, Immortal, Inherit Disease, Spawn of Possession) is the best Immolation have had since their classic early days with Andreas Marschall. Where other bands have come and gone, bucked to trends and drastically changed direction these Yonkers natives always kept close to a world below. "Majesty and Decay" is the best thing they've done since "Unholy Cult" and "Here In After".
