Taking their moniker and central concept from the black plague that ravaged Europe in the 14th century and killed an estimated third of the continent's population. The figure depicted in the band's logo is of a doctor's costume during the Black Plague epidemic. The beak of the suit was an air filter. "Tenebris Obortis" is the fourth record for this veteran German black metal combo since forming in 1997. As with the previous Pest records "Tenebris Obortis" starts off with a eerie ambient piece. Sounds like (early) Burzum, "Deathcrush" era Mayhem and the Isengard demos while the melodies are reminiscent of Ildjarn sideproject Sort Vokter. Like any long-standing black metal act Pest combine furious blasting with morbid sounding midpaced sections. The rasping vocals are thoroughly sick and depraved. Unlike their Swedish namesakes this Pest isn't inspired by proto-black metallers Darkthrone, Bathory or Celtic Frost. Recorded in the band's rehearsal studio the sound is surprisingly proficient with a thick guitar tone, meaty bass lines and natural sounding drums. The artwork is remarkably similar to that of 1996 PC game Fragile Alliance. Definitely a storming and dirty sounding black metal record.
