Dark and unholy sounding US styled death metal from Palermo, Sicily. The vocals and general execution is reminiscent of "A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria" era Bal-Sagoth minus the bombastic and pompous keyboard work or early New York death metal bands such as Avulsion, Incantation or Morpheus Descends. The second track opens with a serene acoustic guitar intro that perfectly sets the mood for the darkness to come. The light use of synthesizers add to the grim and eerie atmosphere. The leads/solos harken back to the classic '90s days of the death metal genre. The production is raw and that of a glorified demo – but it fits surprisingly well. Sortilegium prove that death metal doesn't need to be played fast or insanely technical in order to impress or set a mood. Like the old masters of the scene they combine monolithic songstructures with primitive musicianship, resulting in a dark and oppressive sounding whole. Together with Humangled this act is slowly reviving the classic death metal sound on Italian shores. Hopefully more will follow the example set by these bands. By no means mandatory, but satisfying nevertheless. Fans of "Mortal Massacre" era Mortician and (early) Incantation should check this out. Just don't expect to be blown away entirely. Promising indeed.
