Adveniat Hiems
Loki (ep)

Atmospheric black metal from Milan, Italy with a Latin name that translates "let the winter come". 'Iving' is a tasteful cinematic synthesizer intro. The vocals range from grunts, rasps to dramatic narrative passages. The bass lines and keyboards form a supportive background, while the relatively thin guitars create the outlines for each cut. The drumming is simple and to-the-point, and very much reminiscent of (early) black metal acts such as Ancient Rites, Samael and Xantotol. Adveniat Hiems plays at a steady midtempo which give "Loki" a doom aura, as do the spooky monk like chants. The production is minimal but good enough. The drumming is especially powerful compared to a lot of other underground black metal bands, with a clearly different sound for the snare and kickdrums. The guitar tone is fuzzy and could use some more bite and definition as it is an unclear mess now. The light use of melodies create an atmosphere of sorrow and melancholy. The artwork is good enough, but not really special. Adveniat Hiems have delivered a nice little EP with "Loki" but don't manage to stand out from the many others in this genre despite their considerably lower tempo. Nevertheless might "Loki" appeal to fans of "older" black metal bands such as Ancient Rites and Samael.
